Biologics or biological products are medicines made from living organisms through highly complex manufacturing processes and must be handled and administered under carefully monitored conditions. Biologics include a wide variety of products such as gene and cell therapies, therapeutic proteins, monoclonal antibodies, and vaccines<\/strong>. Biologics are used to prevent, treat or cure a variety of diseases including cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and autoimmune disorders.<\/p>\n Vaccines are made from the same germs (or parts of them) that cause disease; for example, polio vaccine is made from polio virus. But the germs in vaccines are either killed or weakened so they won?t make an individual sick. Vaccines offer a solution to this problem. They help develop immunity without getting sick first.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Vaccines containing these weakened or killed germs are introduced into one?s body, usually by injection. The immune system reacts to the vaccine in a similar way that it would if it were being invaded by the disease ? by making antibodies. The antibodies destroy the vaccine germs just as they would the disease germs ? like a training exercise. Then they stay in the body, giving immunity.
